Dit indrukwekkende, tweetalige boek verscheen in 1991 als begeleidende, inhoudelijk zelfstandige publicatie bij de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in de Oude Kerk in Amsterdam. Het project vertrok vanuit een bijzonder uitgangspunt: wat gebeurt er wanneer je fotografie niet louter beschouwt als het objectief vastleggen van een werkelijkheid, maar als een vorm van theater?

De titel verwijst naar een bekende theaterterm. Waar op een toneel de drie zichtbare muren het decor vormen, is de 'vierde wand' de denkbeeldige grens tussen de acteurs en het publiek. Een fotograaf doet eigenlijk iets vergelijkbaars: door de camera tegenover een scène te plaatsen, kan de werkelijkheid vóór de lens tegelijkertijd registratie én voorstelling worden. Het boek stelt daardoor fundamentele vragen die nog altijd buitengewoon actueel zijn: Wanneer wordt een documentaire foto een soort toneel? Hoeveel is er in een foto geënsceneerd? En waar ligt de grens tussen werkelijkheid, pose, performance en fictie?

Structuur en betekenis

De vierde wand is veel meer dan een traditioneel fotoboek; het is een multidisciplinair project dat een specifiek fotografisch denken uit de vroege jaren negentig documenteert. De publicatie is opgedeeld in vier blokken (De Pose, Ruimte & Tijd, Het Verhaal en De Illusie), ingeleid door vier verdiepende essays.

Leo Divendal, een sleutelfiguur in de toenmalige Nederlandse fotografie, was verantwoordelijk voor de redactie. Zijn invloedrijke inleidende essay The Fourth Wall (pagina 10-12) wordt tot op de dag van vandaag aangehaald in internationale academische literatuur over performance-fotografie. Het experimentele karakter van het boek wordt verder versterkt doordat 43 fotografen gekoppeld zijn aan evenzoveel schrijvers, dichters en denkers, die elk hun eigen literaire of beeldende visie op het thema geven.

De 43 schrijvers weerspiegelen een even brede artistieke benadering, met bijdragen van onder meer de Chinese dichter Duoduo, Yolanda Entius (die dit project expliciet als 'scenario' in haar oeuvre opnam), Connie Palmen, Remco Campert, Rutger Kopland en Michel Tournier.

This impressive, bilingual book was published in 1991 as an accompanying, yet substantively independent publication for the exhibition of the same name in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam. The project started from a special premise: what happens when you view photography not merely as the objective recording of reality, but as a form of theatre?

The title refers to a well-known theatrical term. Where the three visible walls on a stage form the set, the 'fourth wall' is the imaginary boundary between the actors and the audience. A photographer essentially does something similar: by placing the camera opposite a scene, the reality in front of the lens can simultaneously become both a recording and a performance. Consequently, the book raises fundamental questions that remain highly relevant today: When does a documentary photo become a kind of stage? How much of a photo is staged? And where lies the boundary between reality, pose, performance, and fiction?

Structure and significance

The Fourth Wall is much more than a traditional photo book; it is a multidisciplinary project that documents a specific photographic mindset from the early 1990s. The publication is divided into four sections (The Pose, Space & Time, The Narrative, and The Illusion), introduced by four in-depth essays.

Leo Divendal, a key figure in Dutch photography at the time, was responsible for the editing. His influential introductory essay The Fourth Wall (pages 10-12) is cited to this day in international academic literature on performance photography. The experimental character of the book is further reinforced by pairing 43 photographers with an equal number of writers, poets, and thinkers, each offering their own literary or visual perspective on the theme.
