Protest Photographs – Chauncey Hare | Nieuw in folie
ENGELSTALIG BOEK / ENGLISH-LANGUAGE BOOK
NIEUW BOEK, NOG IN DE ORIGINELE UITGEVERSFOLIE / NEW BOOK, STILL SEALED IN THE ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S SHRINK-WRAP
A compelling photographic document about work, domestic life and power in America. In Protest Photographs, Chauncey Hare turns his camera towards the everyday homes and workplaces of ordinary Americans: living rooms, kitchens, offices, factories and other spaces in which people spend their lives.
For Hare, these photographs were explicitly a form of protest. He wanted his work to warn against the growing power of large corporations over working people. Published in 2009, this substantial monograph brings together approximately 170 of his photographs. Full English description below ↓
Nederlandse beschrijving

English description
Chauncey Hare (1934–2019) photographed the interiors of working-class homes and workplaces across the United States during the late 1960s and early 1970s. His subjects are inseparable from their surroundings: furniture, televisions, desks, fluorescent lighting, machinery, paperwork and everyday possessions are all part of the picture.
This attention to environment is central to Hare's work. He examined how people lived and worked, and what their surroundings could reveal about economic circumstances, labour and power.
For Hare, however, these photographs were more than social documentation. He described himself not primarily as a photographer, but as an engineer, family therapist and, above all, a protester. He explicitly connected his photographs to his concern about the increasing power of large corporations and their managers over working people.
From engineer to photographer
Hare's perspective was closely connected to his own working life. He spent many years as an engineer for a major oil company and later worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Photography initially developed alongside his technical career.
Beginning in 1968, he photographed intensively in California and later worked in locations including the Ohio Valley. His subjects included both private homes and workplaces. In 1977, the Museum of Modern Art in New York presented a solo exhibition of his photographs from this period.
His relationship with the art world nevertheless remained uneasy. Hare resisted the idea that his photographs should simply become art objects to be bought and sold. Their social purpose remained fundamental to him.
Photography as protest
Published in 2009, Protest Photographs contains approximately 170 tritone photographs, roughly twice as many images as appeared in Hare's earlier books Interior America (1977) and This Was Corporate America (1984).
The photographs are accompanied by Hare's personal introduction, in which he discusses his life, his work as an engineer, his identification with the people whose homes he photographed and his difficult relationship with the art world.
The result is both a substantial survey of Hare's photography and an insight into the ideas behind it. Protest Photographs demonstrates how documentary photography can function simultaneously as a record of everyday life and as an explicitly critical social statement.
This first edition is brand new and still sealed in the original publisher's shrink-wrap, making it an especially interesting copy for collectors of American documentary photography and photobooks.
