Text on flap (1981):
The history of color photography goes back over one hundred years, but the medium only came of age as an art form in the late 1960s, when it was called "the new frontier." Over the last decade, color has emerged as the dominant issue in contemporary photography. This authoritative study by photography critic Sally Eauclaire presents the first complete survey of those artists who brought serious aesthetic considerations to color photography—and turned it into a vital and varied art form.
Illustrated with over 165 faithfully reproduced examples, The New Color Photography explores the formal and technical innovations of forty of the most prominent color photographers and systematically examines and compares their work. Among the photographers included are Joel Meyerowitz, Harry Callahan, Helen Levitt, William Eggleston, David Hockney, Jan Groover, and Lucas Samaras. Biographies, bibliographies, and exhibition lists are included for each photographer represented, and relevant technical information on their photographing and printing procedures is documented as well.
The photographs reproduced are selected from a 200-work exhibition titled The New Color, which will be making an international museum tour in 1981-83. This definitive book should be required reading for camera enthusiasts everywhere and for anyone intrigued by color photography as an art form.
