A captivating visual memoir chronicling over fifty years of self-portraits by Alan Adler, the world’s most photographed man and a living legend of photobooth culture.
In Auto-Photo: A Life in Portraits, Melbourne-based photobooth technician Alan Adler becomes both artist and subject in a remarkable archive of self-portraits taken weekly from the 1970s to the 2010s. This beautifully designed photobook, co-published by Perimeter Editions and the Centre for Contemporary Photography, offers a unique blend of vernacular photography, autobiography, and cultural history.
With over 200 black-and-white and color images, the book captures Adler’s evolving appearance, fashion, and expressions—ranging from playful to poignant—against the unchanging backdrop of the photobooth. Accompanied by insightful essays from Patrick Pound, Catlin Langford, and Daniel Boetker-Smith, and an interview with Adler himself, this first edition is both a tribute to a singular life and a meditation on time, identity, and the democratic nature of photography.
Perfect for collectors of photobooks, fans of visual storytelling, and anyone fascinated by the intersection of art and everyday life.
