Preface by Edward Bunker
From 2000 to 2003, artist Nicolai Howalt followed young Danish boxers, both in Denmark and abroad. This resulted in the book Boxer. In this book, Howalt captures the moments before and after the match, with the photos radiating a sense of spirit, emotion, anticipation, and energy.
The double portraits reflect the dreams of youth, puberty, and identity. Howalt uses the boxing match as a stage, deliberately choosing not to describe the inner experience of boxing or the competitive aspects of the sport. Boxing becomes a symbol for the struggle between fear and courage, dream and reality, and the transition from boy to man, standing on your own for the first time.
As a teenager, Howalt himself boxed, and he realized that it was the moments just before and after the match that were the most captivating.
Nicolai Howalt (born in 1970) is a Danish visual artist and contemporary photographer. He was born in Copenhagen and graduated from the Danish School of Art Photography Fatamorgana in 1992. Howalt's work encompasses documentary, conceptual, and installation art, often exploring dualities, connections, and temporality as central aspects. His work has documentary references and operates at the intersection of conceptual photography and installation art. Howalt has had several solo and group exhibitions, both in Denmark and internationally.
