An intimate visual narrative of memory, loss and connection
Hardcover with dust jacket and additional transparent protective jacket
First edition, 2004. English edition, limited to 1,500 copies.
Near mint; a few minor scuffs and surface scratches on the transparent protective jacket.
About the book
In Rainchild, encounters, landscapes and domestic moments acquire meaning through their sequence. Rather than following a chronological narrative, Botman connects photographs through memory and feeling. The book features predominantly black-and-white photographs, alongside a few colour images.
The project developed following a journey across Australia in 1993 with photographer Max Pam and his children, during a period when Botman was coming to terms with several losses. Over the following years, he combined photographs from his travels with images made at home in successive book dummies. Fred Ritchin and Victor Levie contributed to the final editing and design.
About the photographer
Machiel Botman (b. 1955) is a self-taught Dutch photographer whose personal surroundings provide the starting point for his work. The photobook is central to his practice: in publications such as Heartbeat and Rainchild, individual photographs become rhythmic, associative visual narratives.
