Working Lives – Marc S. Miller (red.)
The Southern Exposure History of Labor in the South
ENGELSTALIG BOEK / ENGLISH-LANGUAGE BOOK
A history of the American South seen from the workplace. Working Lives shifts attention away from industrialists, politicians and the traditional mythology of the South and towards miners, textile workers, farm labourers, factory workers and union organisers.
Combining social history with oral history, investigative reporting, historical documents and photography, the book draws on the work of Southern Exposure magazine and traces Southern labour history from 1900 to 1980. Full English description below ↓
Nederlandse beschrijving
Het boek is chronologisch opgebouwd in drie grote perioden: The Promised Land, 1900–1929, No More Moanin', 1929–1945 en Here Come a Wind, 1945–1980.
Geschiedenis in woord én beeld
Sommige bijdragen zijn vrijwel fotografische essays, zoals Day by Day, 1946: The Sargent Family, met foto's van Russell W. Lee.

English description
Working Lives begins with the people who actually did the work. Their voices, experiences and photographs form the basis of this extensive social history of labour in the twentieth-century American South.
Editor Marc S. Miller assembled the book from material produced by Southern Exposure, the journal founded by the Institute for Southern Studies in Durham, North Carolina, in 1973. Many contributions had previously appeared in the magazine; others were updated or written specifically for this volume.
Rather than presenting a conventional institutional history of organized labour, the book combines interviews, investigative reporting, personal recollections, songs, historical documents and photography.
From cotton fields and coal mines to factories
The book is organised chronologically into three major sections: The Promised Land, 1900–1929, No More Moanin', 1929–1945, and Here Come a Wind, 1945–1980.
Its subjects include the movement from farm to mill, child labour, mining and industrial disasters, the Southern Tenant Farmers' Union, textile mills, the Gastonia strike, automobile workers and the UAW, hospital workers, cotton production, occupational disease and workplace safety.
Work is never treated in isolation. The accounts also deal with family life, housing, health, education, race and the possibilities – or lack of them – for workers to improve their lives.
Labour, race and civil rights
In the American South, labour relations were inseparable from racial segregation. Working Lives documents both the divisions between Black and white workers and attempts by labour organisations to overcome those divisions.
The history of organised labour consequently intersects throughout the book with the history of the American civil rights movement. It also shifts attention away from famous leaders towards local organisers, workers and communities.
The introduction is by labour historian Herbert Gutman, an important figure in the development of American 'new labor history', with its emphasis on workers' everyday lives, culture and experiences.
History in words and photographs
Photography is an important part of the book. Dozens of historical photographs document workers, families, workplaces, strikes and union activity. Some contributions function almost as photographic essays, including Day by Day, 1946: The Sargent Family, with photographs by Russell W. Lee.
Working Lives is therefore both a history of Southern labour and a substantial visual document of twentieth-century working-class life in the American South.
In his preface, Miller describes the book as the product not simply of a few people assembling a volume, but of ten years of work by writers, activists, Institute staff and volunteers – and of generations of Southern workers whose experiences give the book its substance.
