Inhoud & genre
This powerful photography collection combines documentary realism, sociopolitical critique, and personal memoir. Chauncey Hare illuminates the interiors of working-class America from the late 1960s to early 1970s—homes, cubicles, and kitchens—capturing scenes of everyday alienation and protest.
Genre: Documentary photography / social critique / visual non-fiction
Themes: labor exploitation, corporate power, suburban malaise, alienation, and the decline of the American Dream
About the author(s):
Chauncey Hare (1934–2019) began his career as a petroleum engineer and later became a self-taught photographer. Awarded multiple Guggenheim and NEA grants, Hare exhibited at MoMA and used his camera as a tool of protest—"a protester first" who refused to betray the integrity of his subjects.
Edited by Jack Steven, this volume expands upon Hare’s earlier books Interior America and This Was Corporate America, offering nearly double the number of images in 373 tritone prints and a candid introduction by Hare himself.
Why this book matters
Visually arresting: stark, unretouched scenes that expose the invisible suffering of American workers
Historically timely: documents cultural and economic disillusionment in post-industrial America
Authentic voice: Hare’s own introduction merges personal testimony with political engagement
Collector’s value: first-edition hardcover still sealed makes it an exceptional find for photography and art history enthusiasts
