Yesterday We Were Girls, Katie Prock
A hauntingly beautiful exploration of memory, identity, and the fragile threads of girlhood
Winner of the De Pietri Artphilein Foundation Photobook Contest 2023
Yesterday We Were Girls is a deeply personal and visually arresting photobook by artist Katie Prock. Through a mix of archival family photographs, handcrafted collage, poetic prose, and porcelain objects, Prock reconstructs her adolescence within a strict Mennonite community and the emotional aftermath of leaving it behind. This mixed-media project is both a memoir and a meditation on the complexities of female identity, mental health, and generational bonds.
The book weaves together themes of memory, domesticity, and the tension between tradition and autonomy. Prock’s process—tearing, stitching, layering—mirrors the emotional labor of healing and reclaiming one’s narrative. A limited-edition art book (only 250 copies), Yesterday We Were Girls is a must-have for collectors of contemporary photobooks, feminist art, and visual storytelling.
