Printing Images in Antwerp van kunsthistoricus Jan Van der Stock onderzoekt hoe de gedrukte afbeelding in de vijftiende en zestiende eeuw haar intrede deed in Antwerpen en hoe de stad vervolgens uitgroeide tot een van de belangrijkste centra van prentproductie in Europa. Het boek verscheen in 1998 als tweede deel van de reeks Studies in Prints and Printmaking en is de Engelstalige bewerking van Van der Stocks proefschrift uit 1995.

Antwerpen en de opkomst van de prent

Van der Stock behandelt de prent niet alleen als kunstwerk, maar vooral als een nieuw medium dat een plaats moest veroveren binnen de bestaande stedelijke economie en samenleving. In de vijftiende eeuw verschenen in Antwerpen prenten die aanvankelijk mogelijk door reizende kooplieden werden aangevoerd. Later vestigden de eerste prentmakers zich in de stad. In de zestiende eeuw ontwikkelde Antwerpen zich vervolgens tot een internationaal centrum voor de productie, uitgave en handel in prenten.

Het boek reconstrueert de wereld waarin die ontwikkeling plaatsvond. Van der Stock onderzoekt de verschillende ambachtelijke tradities waaruit prentmakers voortkwamen, de houding van de bestaande gilden tegenover het nieuwe vak en de pogingen van het stedelijk bestuur om controle over het nieuwe medium te krijgen.

Bijzondere aandacht gaat uit naar de economische kant van de prentproductie. Op basis van uitvoerig archiefonderzoek brengt Van der Stock onder meer prijzen, oplagegroottes en kosten van drukken en inkleuren in kaart. Daarmee ontstaat niet alleen een geschiedenis van de Antwerpse prentkunst, maar ook een beeld van de productie, handel en consumptie van relatief goedkope gedrukte afbeeldingen in een vroegmoderne stad.

De studie loopt tot 1585, het jaar van de Val van Antwerpen, en is rijk geïllustreerd. Uitvoerige noten, bibliografie en registers maken het boek tevens tot een belangrijk naslagwerk voor onderzoek naar prentkunst, boek- en drukgeschiedenis en de culturele geschiedenis van Antwerpen.

Printing Images in Antwerp by art historian Jan Van der Stock examines the introduction of the printed image in fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Antwerp and the city's subsequent development into one of Europe's major centres of print production. Published in 1998 as volume 2 of Studies in Prints and Printmaking, the book is the English-language version of Van der Stock's 1995 doctoral dissertation.

Printmaking and the city

Rather than treating prints solely as works of art, Van der Stock studies printmaking as a new medium that had to find its place within the existing social, institutional and economic structures of the city.

Prints began to circulate in Antwerp during the fifteenth century, perhaps initially brought into the city by merchants and travellers. Printmakers eventually established themselves there, and during the sixteenth century Antwerp rapidly developed into an internationally important centre for the production, publication and trade of printed images.

Van der Stock reconstructs the traditions from which print producers emerged and examines the responses of existing urban institutions to the new medium. He considers how traditional guilds attempted to incorporate practitioners of this new craft and how government authorities sought to regulate it.

A particularly valuable aspect of the study is its attention to the economics of printmaking. Extensive archival research provides detailed information on such subjects as the prices of prints, the numbers of impressions produced and the costs involved in printing and colouring them. The result is not simply a history of Antwerp printmaking, but a study of how printed images were produced, marketed, distributed and consumed within an early modern European city.

The study continues to 1585, the year of the Fall of Antwerp, and is extensively illustrated. Detailed notes, bibliography and indexes also make the volume a substantial reference work for the study of prints, printing and the cultural history of Antwerp.
