Van handschrift naar gedrukte boek

Centraal staat de periode waarin het gedrukte boek zijn plaats veroverde naast het handschrift. Verschillende auteurs onderzoeken de Romeinse boekproductie vanaf de vijftiende eeuw en plaatsen deze in een breder Europees netwerk.

Aan bod komen onder meer de vroegste Romeinse incunabelen, de eerste in Italië gedrukte boeken, de verhouding tussen gedrukte en handgeschreven boeken in de Vaticaanse Bibliotheek onder paus Sixtus IV, vijftiende-eeuwse houtsneden uit Rome en Venetië en de geografische verspreiding van drukkers en boekhandel in het zestiende-eeuwse Rome.

Ook afzonderlijke collecties worden onderzocht, waaronder Romeinse incunabelen in de Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, de Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in München en de Poolse Nationale Bibliotheek. Een bijdrage behandelt de humanistische drukker Paolo Manuzio, zoon van de beroemde Venetiaanse drukker Aldus Manutius, en diens verhuizing van Venetië naar Rome.

De bundel eindigt met uitvoerige registers van namen, handschriften, archiefbronnen en besproken edities, waardoor het boek ook als naslagwerk bruikbaar is.

De bijdragen zijn geschreven in Italiaans, Engels en Frans. Het boek is geïllustreerd met afbeeldingen in zwart-wit en kleur, waaronder reproducties van vroege gedrukte en geïllumineerde boeken.

Uitvoering

Opvallend is de sobere, klassiek uitgevoerde flexcover van de Vaticaanse Bibliotheek. Het boekblok heeft ruwe, niet volledig gelijkgesneden sneden; dit behoort tot de uitvoering van het boek en is geen beschadiging.

Conditie

Nog mooi en schoon exemplaar. Het binnenwerk verkeert in zeer nette staat. De zachte omslag heeft lichte gebruikssporen, met name aan de iets overstekende en daardoor kwetsbare randen en hoeken. Zie hiervoor ook de afbeeldingen.

Early printing in Rome and Europe

La stampa romana nella città dei papi e in Europa is a scholarly collection devoted to the development of printing in Rome, the role of the papal city in European book culture, and the networks connecting printers, scholars, libraries and collectors. Edited by Cristina Dondi, Andreina Rita, Adalbert Roth and Marina Venier, it was published in 2016 by the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana (Vatican Apostolic Library) as volume 506 of its scholarly series Studi e Testi.

The volume contains papers associated with an international seminar of the Consortium of European Research Libraries (CERL), held at the Vatican Library on 11 November 2011. It was also issued as CERL Papers XII.

From manuscript to printed book

The essays focus particularly on the period in which the printed book established its place alongside the manuscript, examining Roman book production from the fifteenth century onwards within a wider European network.

Subjects include early Roman incunabula, the first books printed in Italy, the relationship between manuscripts and printed books in the Vatican Library under Pope Sixtus IV, fifteenth-century woodcuts from Rome and Venice, and the geographical distribution of printers and the book trade in Rome.

Individual collections are also examined, including Roman incunabula held by the Vatican Apostolic Library, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich and the Polish National Library. One contribution discusses the humanist printer Paolo Manuzio, son of the celebrated Venetian printer Aldus Manutius, and his move from Venice to Rome.

Extensive indexes of names, manuscripts, archival sources and bibliographical references to editions make the volume useful as a scholarly reference work as well as a collection of specialist studies.

The contributions are in Italian, English and French. The volume is illustrated in black and white and colour, including reproductions of early printed and illuminated books.

Binding and production

The book has the sober, classically designed flexible paper cover characteristic of this Vatican Library publication. The text block has rough, intentionally untrimmed edges; these are part of the book's production and should not be mistaken for damage.

Condition

A clean and well-preserved copy. The interior is in very good condition. The flexible cover shows light signs of handling, particularly along the slightly projecting and therefore vulnerable edges and corners. Please see the photographs for details.
