Vijftig benaderingen van illustratie
The Illustration Idea Book: Inspiration from 50 Masters is geen handleiding voor tekentechnieken, maar richt zich op het ontwikkelen en verbeelden van ideeën. Steven Heller en Gail Anderson gebruiken het werk van vijftig illustratoren om te laten zien hoe uiteenlopend een illustratieve oplossing voor een opdracht kan zijn.
Aan bod komen onder meer het creëren van personages, symbool en metafoor, geïllustreerde typografie, karikatuur en het construeren van fictieve werelden. Iedere benadering wordt geïllustreerd met werk uit de internationale illustratiepraktijk.
Onder de opgenomen makers bevinden zich Yuko Shimizu, Christoph Niemann, Marion Deuchars, David Plunkert, Anita Kunz, Edel Rodriguez, Hanoch Piven, Lotta Nieminen, Giorgia Lupi en Stefanie Posavec. Daardoor functioneert het boek tegelijkertijd als ideeënboek en als compacte kennismaking met uiteenlopende stijlen en toepassingen binnen de hedendaagse illustratie.
Steven Heller & Gail Anderson
Steven Heller is schrijver, criticus en docent op het gebied van grafische vormgeving en visuele cultuur. Hij publiceerde meer dan 170 boeken over design en populaire cultuur en ontving in 2011 de Smithsonian National Design Award.
Gail Anderson is grafisch ontwerper, schrijver en docent en was verbonden aan de Visual Arts Press van de School of Visual Arts in New York. Samen publiceerden Heller en Anderson meerdere boeken waarin ideeën en werkwijzen uit grafische vormgeving toegankelijk worden gemaakt.
Uitvoering
Deze eerste druk verscheen in 2018 bij Laurence King Publishing. Het compacte formaat en de vele kleurenillustraties maken het boek geschikt om doorheen te bladeren en ideeën op te doen, maar ook als introductie tot verschillende benaderingen binnen de illustratie.
De illustratie op het omslag is van Christoph Niemann.
Conditie
Vrijwel nog als nieuw exemplaar. Zeer mooi en schoon bewaard gebleven.

Fifty approaches to illustration
The Illustration Idea Book: Inspiration from 50 Masters is not primarily a manual of drawing techniques. Instead, Steven Heller and Gail Anderson focus on developing and visualising ideas, using work by fifty illustrators to demonstrate the many different ways in which an illustrative brief can be approached.
Subjects include character creation, symbol and metaphor, illustrated lettering, caricature and the invention of imaginary worlds. Each approach is demonstrated through examples from international illustration practice.
Featured artists include Yuko Shimizu, Christoph Niemann, Marion Deuchars, David Plunkert, Anita Kunz, Edel Rodriguez, Hanoch Piven, Lotta Nieminen, Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec. Steven Heller & Gail Anderson
Steven Heller is a writer, critic and educator specialising in graphic design and visual culture. He has written more than 170 books on design and popular culture and received the Smithsonian National Design Award in 2011.
Gail Anderson is a graphic designer, writer and educator who has been associated with the Visual Arts Press at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Heller and Anderson have collaborated on several accessible books exploring ideas and working methods in graphic design.

This first edition was published by Laurence King Publishing in 2018. Its compact format and numerous colour illustrations make it suitable both for browsing for inspiration and as an introduction to different approaches to contemporary illustration.
