Seeing the Hours is een fotoboekje van documentairefotograaf Reggie (Reginald) Tucker, die oorspronkelijk werd opgeleid als schilder aan de Goldsmiths School of Art in Londen. Voor dit fotoproject reisde Tucker gedurende drie jaar. Zo bezocht hij Oekraïne tweemaal – waar hij een zomer bij een familie verbleef en Russisch leerde – en doorkruiste hij de Verenigde Staten per trein van kust tot kust. Zijn werkwijze was even systematisch als doeltreffend: hij arriveerde op nieuwe, alledaagse locaties zoals busstations en winkelcentra om simpelweg te wachten, te fotograferen, en weer verder te reizen. "Ik verwachtte beweging te fotograferen en kwam terug met beelden van stilte en introspectie," schrijft Tucker zelf in het voorwoord. Temidden van alle hectiek werd hij aangetrokken tot de mensen op de bankjes en in schaduwrijke hoeken. Het resultaat is een fotoboek dat het alledaagse straatleven documenteert, ver weg van journalistieke of politieke sensatie.

Diepere symboliek en betekenis

Waar veel Britse documentairefotografen uit zijn tijd zich richtten op de meer expliciete of dramatische kanten van sociale verandering, zoekt Tucker in dit werk nadrukkelijk de stilte op. Hij transformeerde zichzelf voor dit project tot een absolute "professional in wachten". Hij observeerde hoe mensen arriveerden en weer vertrokken, terwijl hij onbeweeglijk achterbleef. Dit onthaaste proces beïnvloedde zijn fotografie; de resulterende beelden bezitten een verleidelijke traagheid en weerspiegelen het gevoel dat de tijd zelf haar momentum verliest.

Wat dit werk voor de hedendaagse kijker extra bijzonder maakt, is het onherroepelijk verdwenen straatbeeld dat de foto's tonen. Tegenwoordig wordt vrijwel elk moment van stilstand in de openbare ruimte onmiddellijk opgevuld door de afleiding van een scherm. Tuckers beelden tonen een recent, maar inmiddels totaal vervlogen tijdperk waarin mensen nog daadwerkelijk – en vaak ongemakkelijk – overgeleverd waren aan de trage stroom van de tijd en aan hun eigen gedachten. Het boek is daarmee niet alleen een ingetogen fotografische studie van transitiesituaties, maar in retrospectief ook een waardevol historisch document van de pure, analoge verveling.

Seeing the Hours is a small photobook by documentary photographer Reggie (Reginald) Tucker, who originally trained as a painter at the Goldsmiths School of Art in London. For this photography project, Tucker traveled for three years. He visited Ukraine twice—spending a summer with a family and learning Russian—and crossed the United States by train from coast to coast. His method was as systematic as it was effective: he would arrive at new, everyday locations such as bus stations and shopping malls simply to wait, photograph, and then travel on. "I expected to photograph movement and came away with images of stillness and introspection," Tucker himself writes in the foreword. Amidst all the hustle and bustle, he was drawn to the people on the benches and in shadowy corners. The result is a photobook that documents everyday street life, far removed from journalistic or political sensation.

Deeper Symbolism and Meaning

Where many British documentary photographers of his time focused on the more explicit or dramatic aspects of social change, Tucker explicitly seeks out the silence in this work. For this project, he transformed himself into an absolute "professional at waiting". He observed people arriving and leaving, while he remained motionless. This unhurried process influenced his photography; the resulting images possess a tantalizing slowness and reflect the sense of time itself losing momentum.

What makes this work particularly special for the contemporary viewer is the irrevocably vanished streetscape the photos depict. Nowadays, almost every moment of standstill in public spaces is immediately filled by the distraction of a screen. Tucker's images show a recent, yet now completely bygone era in which people were still actually—and often uncomfortably—surrendered to the slow flow of time and to their own thoughts. The book is therefore not only an understated photographic study of transitional situations, but in retrospect also a valuable historical document of pure, analog boredom.
