An-other City, Henrik Valeur
A radical rethinking of urban life in the age of climate crisis and inequality
New book
In An-other City, Danish architect and urbanist Henrik Valeur challenges the foundations of modern urban development and proposes bold, alternative visions for how we live, build, and coexist. This thought-provoking book blends architecture, philosophy, activism, and cultural critique into a compelling call for change.
About the book:
Genre: Architecture, Urbanism, Social Critique
Themes: Sustainability, inequality, self-organization, alternative communities, climate adaptation, cultural transformation
Modern cities, Valeur argues, are rooted in ideals of material wealth, private property, and control over nature—values that have led to environmental destruction and social exclusion. In contrast, An-other City explores experimental, anarchistic approaches to urban development that empower communities and embrace ecological realities.
The book features real-world case studies from Denmark, including:
- Musicon in Roskilde – a city district developed without a master plan
- Badensgade in Copenhagen – a grassroots effort to create greener, more inclusive public space
- Erdkehlgraven – a self-organized settlement under threat
Valeur draws inspiration from diverse sources: prehistoric cultures, Daoist philosophy, Ursula K. Le Guin, Dostoevsky, Inuit traditions, and the Situationist movement. The result is a richly layered, interdisciplinary exploration of what cities could become—if we dare to imagine differently.
