In Writings on Art, Mark Rothko—renowned for his luminous color field paintings—emerges not only as a visual artist but also as a profound thinker and eloquent writer. This landmark volume gathers over 90 of Rothko’s texts, including essays, letters, lectures, and statements written between 1934 and 1969. Together, they offer a rare glimpse into his evolving artistic philosophy, his views on spirituality, education, and the role of the artist, and his relationships with contemporaries like Barnett Newman and Clyfford Still.
Edited and annotated by Miguel López-Remiro, this collection is essential reading for anyone interested in modern art, abstract expressionism, or the intellectual foundations of visual creativity. Rothko’s reflections are as rich and layered as his paintings—meditative, passionate, and deeply human.

About the author(s):
Mark Rothko (1903–1970) was a Russian-American painter and a leading figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement. Known for his large-scale color field paintings, Rothko sought to evoke deep emotional and spiritual experiences through art. Though often perceived as reclusive, he was a prolific writer and thinker, deeply engaged with questions of meaning, form, and the human condition.
Miguel López-Remiro, the editor, is a Spanish art historian and curator who has worked extensively on Rothko’s legacy and writings.
