Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886—1969) is recognized as a leading figure in twentieth-century architecture, creator of some of the world's most iconic buildings, amongst them the Seagram Building, Berlin National Gallery, Lake Shore Drive Apartments and the Farnsworth House. Mies van der Rohe at Work is a unique document of the architect's philosophy of architecture, his way of working, and his rigorous teaching methodology.
This book is a new paperback reprint of a title first published in 1974; it provides in-depth examination — through statistics, photographs and detail drawings — of the most illustrious buildings of the architect's career. Phyllis Lambert, Founding Director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, and Curator of a forthcoming exhibition of Mies van der Rohe's work, contributes a Foreword specially for this new reprint. Author Peter Carter, who studied and later worked with Mies for thirteen years, began the book while an Associate with Mies van der Rohe's firm. Mies's structural and spatial concepts are analysed through his three major building prototypes, specifically the skeleton frame building, both in its high- and low-rise manifestations, and the clear-span building. His most important projects are also examined, not only as isolated functions, but within the context of urban space.
Mies van der Rohe also made a significant contribution to architectural education, first at the Bauhaus in the early 1930s, and later in the USA as Director of the College of Architecture, Planning and Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology. The book devotes a section to the architect as educator which is illustrated with examples drawn from Mies's students at IIT. The final section of the book traces his life from his early years as the son of a stonemason to his eventual emergence as the twentieth-century's master architect of steel and glass, and includes statements by Mies van der Rohe and his colleagues.
Peter Carter is an English architect who trained at the Northern Polytechnic and now practices in London. In 1958 he joined Mies van der Rohe's office after studying with him at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. He continued to work in the office for thirteen years, becoming an Associate of the firm and the project architect for Mies's London Mansion House Square Scheme and the Toronto- Dominion Centre. After Mies died Peter Carter joined the Toronto architects Bregman and Hamann before returning to England in 1 975 to establish his own practice in London. Among his office's realized buildings are the award-winning Hambro Life (Allied Dunbar) Centre and the Allied Dunbar Tricentre, both in Swindon and undertaken in association with YRM.
