Vier eeuwen Japans porselein

Text in English
400 years of Japanese porcelain
Porcelain production began in Arita, on the Japanese island of Kyushu, in 1616. Four hundred years later, this centuries-old craft tradition became the starting point for an ambitious international design project.
For Arita / Table of Contents, sixteen contemporary designers collaborated with ten traditional Japanese porcelain manufacturers to create sixteen collections in which historic craftsmanship and contemporary design come together.
Japanese craftsmanship meets contemporary design
The project was developed under the creative direction of Dutch design duo Scholten & Baijings.
The participating designers explored how traditional production techniques, materials and decoration could be applied to objects for everyday life in the 21st century.
The result is an exchange between the specialist knowledge of Japanese craftspeople and the ideas of designers from different cultural and creative backgrounds.
More than 500 illustrations
Published by Phaidon, this substantial volume documents the project through more than 500 illustrations, including photography, drawings and images of the production processes.
Alongside the sixteen contemporary collections, the book provides an introduction to the history of Arita, its regional ceramic tradition and the creative possibilities that arise when designers and traditional craftspeople work together.
A particularly interesting publication for anyone interested in Japanese porcelain, ceramics, product design, applied arts and contemporary design.
