Work by five Chinese designers: Dido Liu, Fang Ye, FFIXXED STUDIOS, Percy Lau and ZAZ. They share the conviction that tradition and the future must go hand in hand. According to Chinese culture, a designer needs three eyes: two to look to the future and one to look back on five thousand years of Chinese culture.
The exhibition 'The Future of Fashion is Now', which was shown at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam) in the autumn of 2014 and later moved to OCT Contemporary Art Terminal (Shanghai), presented the fashion of the future as envisaged by the youngest generation of designers. Both up-and-coming and established fashion talents from around the world were invited to provide work that could have arisen on any continent—all of them actively pursuing innovation in the world of fashion, making us aware that the fashion system is in a state of flux on all levels.
The third installment of 'The Future of Fashion is Now' at OCT Art & Design Gallery Shenzhen marks an important new addition to the prior show, as five Chinese designers were commissioned by José Teunissen and Han Nefkens to create new pieces. The resulting work is as diverse as it is new to the eye: the added designers present works that are not only beautiful, but also tell stories. They build their work on existing traditions, making us part of their personal journey to the intersection where tradition and future meet, underlining perfectly that tradition and heritage remain an extremely important starting point. Or as Kohei Sugiura once said: "A designer needs three eyes: two to look forward, to see the trends of the world; a third to look back, to see the traditional culture of the past five thousand years."
This publication gives an overview of the five commissioned works that were added to The Future of Fashion is Now and the designers who created them, being part of a generation that tries to find and explore the rich heritage of its culture, while looking forward at the same time.
