Een compact kunstboek gewijd aan een minder bekende maar belangrijke kant van Andy Warhols oeuvre: zijn schoentekeningen. Lang voordat de soepblikken, Marilyns en zeefdrukken hem tot een van de bekendste kunstenaars van de twintigste eeuw maakten, bouwde Warhol in New York een succesvolle carrière op als commercieel illustrator. Schoenen behoorden tot zijn favoriete en meest karakteristieke onderwerpen.

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes brengt veertig tekeningen, prenten en aquarellen uit de archieven van de Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts bijeen. Daaronder bevinden zich zowel bekende beelden als destijds niet eerder gepubliceerde werken.

Van mode-illustrator naar Warhol

Na zijn komst naar New York in 1949 werkte Warhol als illustrator voor tijdschriften en commerciële opdrachtgevers. Zijn elegante lijntekeningen verschenen onder meer in de modewereld en schoenen werden een terugkerend motief.

Juist daarom zijn deze vroege werken interessant binnen zijn latere oeuvre. Warhol richtte zijn aandacht al op aantrekkelijke consumptieartikelen en veranderde gewone handelswaar door stijl, herhaling en presentatie in een begeerlijk beeld.

Een sleutelwerk uit deze periode is À la Recherche du Shoe Perdu, een portfolio uit circa 1955 met speelse schoenportretten en woordgrappen op bekende titels en uitdrukkingen. Een daarvan draagt de titel The Autobiography of Alice B. Shoe — een verwijzing naar Gertrude Steins The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas. Die titel werd ook als ondertitel voor dit boek gebruikt.

De afbeeldingen worden afgewisseld met uitspraken van Warhol. Zo ontstaat een klein boek waarin mode, reclame, grafische vormgeving en beeldende kunst samenkomen — precies op het terrein waarop Warhol zich ontwikkelde voordat hij in de jaren zestig internationaal doorbrak.

Before Campbell's Soup Cans, Marilyn Monroe and the silkscreens that made him one of the defining artists of Pop Art, Andy Warhol was a highly successful commercial illustrator in New York. Shoes were among the subjects with which he established his distinctive graphic style.

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes brings together forty drawings, prints and watercolours selected from the archives of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The selection includes familiar images as well as works that had not previously been published when this book appeared.

Before Pop Art

After arriving in New York in 1949, Warhol worked extensively in commercial and fashion illustration. His elegant line drawings appeared in magazines and advertising, with shoes becoming one of his recurring motifs.

These early works are particularly revealing in retrospect. Long before his famous images of consumer products, Warhol was already transforming ordinary commodities into desirable images through line, presentation and repetition.

An important work from this period is À la Recherche du Shoe Perdu, a portfolio created around 1955 in which shoe portraits were paired with playful references to familiar titles and phrases. One of them was The Autobiography of Alice B. Shoe, a pun on Gertrude Stein's The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas and the subtitle used for this volume.

Warhol quotations accompany the images throughout the book, creating a compact survey in which fashion, advertising, graphic design and fine art meet — the world from which the later Warhol emerged.
