Portretten van multicultureel Amsterdam-Noord

Met Noorderlingen - een serie portretten van de multiculturele samenleving in Amsterdam-Noord - lanceert Kees Tabak (1950) een nieuw project in zijn lange carrière als fotograaf. De meesten kennen hem van zijn belangwekkende werk als popfotograaf in de jaren zeventig en tachtig. Daarnaast fotografeert en filmt hij veel reisreportages over hiken, zeilen, 'last frontier' en de rally Parijs-Dakar. Kees Tabak haalt Madonna al voor de lens nog voor haar grote doorbraak. Met popsterren zoals Lou Reed, Golden Earring en Tom Waits brengt hij de rock 'n' roll in de portretfotografie. Samen met zijn onderwerpen dompelt hij zich onder in de rock 'n' roll. En dat zie je. Hij is de fotochroniqueur die het ontstaan van de punktijd keihard in beeld brengt, een sociale omwenteling van jewelste met figuren als Johnny Rotten (The Sex Pistols), The Clash en The Ramones voor de camera. Vanuit dat standpunt bezien is het niet zo'n gek grote stap naar de fotografie van mensen afkomstig uit diverse culturen in zijn eigen leefwereld in Amsterdam-Noord. Net als met die punks destijds zit Kees Tabak er weer middenin. Hij heeft op bijna elke foto minimaal twee personen uit twee verschillende culturen vastgelegd. Het is een tijdsdocument dat misschien nog hoger moet worden aangeslagen dan Dutch Music (2005), zijn portrettenboek van Nederlandse popsterren, met daarin onder anderen Doe Maar, Ali B, Marco Borsato en Ilse De Lange.

Noordelingen bevat spraakmakende foto's over een stukje Nederland waar plek is voor iedereen van over de hele wereld.

Noordelingen (Northerners) is a series of portraits of the multicultural society in Amsterdam-North photographed by veteran photographer Kees Tabak (1950), who is known for his work as a rock photographer in the seventies and eighties. Apart from that, he photographs and films travel reports on hiking, sailing, 'last frontier' and the Paris-Dakar rally. He worked with Madonna prior to her major breakthrough. With rock stars like Lou Reed, Golden Earring and Tom Waits Kees Tabak brought rock 'n' roll into portrait photography. He immersed himself in the rock 'n' roll world of his subjects. And it shows. He deserves credit for being the photo chronicler who pictured the birth of punk rock through portraits of the likes of Johnny Rotten (The Sex Pistols), The Clash and The Ramones. He has taken the same approach in this portrait of his own multi-cultural home Amsterdam-North. Just like in the punk era, he is bang in the middle of it all again. On virtually every picture he has portrayed a minimum of two people from at least two different cultural backgrounds. It's a document of its time, rivalling Dutch Music (2005), his portrait book featuring Dutch pop stars such as Doe Maar, Ali B, Marco Borsato and Ilse DeLange.

Noordelingen contains spectacular pictures of a part of the Netherlands where there is space for everybody from all over the world.
