Een nieuw medium bereikt Amerika

Toen Louis Daguerre zijn fotografische procédé in 1839 in Frankrijk openbaar maakte, verspreidde de techniek zich snel over Europa en de Verenigde Staten. Vooral in Amerika werd de daguerreotypie buitengewoon populair.

Newhall beschrijft hoe Amerikaanse experimentatoren probeerden Daguerres procédé te reproduceren en vervolgens begonnen te verbeteren. Belichtingstijden werden verkort, technieken aangepast en rond de fotografie ontstond al snel een commerciële bedrijfstak.

In steden verschenen gespecialiseerde daguerreotypiestudio's en grote portretgalerijen. Fotografie werd daarmee toegankelijk voor een veel grotere groep mensen dan geschilderde portretkunst ooit was geweest.

Van techniek naar Amerikaanse beeldcultuur

The Daguerreotype in America gaat daardoor over meer dan de geschiedenis van een fotografische techniek.

Newhall besteedt aandacht aan fotografen, uitvinders en ondernemers, aan technische experimenten en de zoektocht naar kleurenfotografie, maar ook aan de onderwerpen die Amerikanen voor de camera plaatsten.

Portretten vormden een belangrijk deel van de productie. Voor het eerst konden grote aantallen gewone mensen een nauwkeurig beeld van zichzelf en hun familie laten maken. Tegelijkertijd werd de camera gebruikt om steden, landschappen, gebouwen, transport en gebeurtenissen vast te leggen.

Een afzonderlijk hoofdstuk behandelt de manier waarop Amerikaanse daguerreotypisten Daguerres oorspronkelijke procédé veranderden. Zo ontstond gaandeweg een Amerikaanse werkwijze die duidelijk afweek van de techniek waarmee het medium in 1839 was begonnen.

Het omvangrijke beeldgedeelte maakt het boek ook interessant als visuele geschiedenis van negentiende-eeuws Amerika.

De 104 gereproduceerde daguerreotypieën tonen bekende én onbekende mensen, maar ook onder meer Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, de waterfront van Cincinnati, San Francisco, schepen, een locomotief, een brug, een daguerreotypiegalerij en een kamp van Native Americans.

Onder de geportretteerden bevinden zich Abraham Lincoln, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Daniel Webster, Sam Houston en John Brown.

Bij de afbeeldingen vermeldt Newhall waar mogelijk de maker, datering en verblijfplaats van het oorspronkelijke object. Daardoor is het beeldgedeelte niet alleen illustratief, maar ook bruikbaar als documentatie van vroege Amerikaanse fotografie.

Beaumont Newhall

Beaumont Newhall (1908–1993) speelde een belangrijke rol in de ontwikkeling van de fotografiegeschiedenis als zelfstandig onderzoeksgebied. Hij was onder meer de eerste curator fotografie van het Museum of Modern Art in New York en later directeur van George Eastman House in Rochester.

Zijn belangstelling voor fotografie combineerde kunstgeschiedenis met aandacht voor techniek, fotografen en de ontwikkeling van het medium. The Daguerreotype in America verscheen oorspronkelijk in 1961.

Dit exemplaar is de derde, herziene editie uit 1976. Voor deze editie werden correcties en kleine tekstuele herzieningen aangebracht, de bibliografie bijgewerkt en zestien extra pagina's met afbeeldingen toegevoegd.

Het boek bevat daarnaast biografische gegevens, toelichtingen bij tekst en afbeeldingen, een geselecteerde bibliografie en een register.

A new medium arrives in America

Newhall describes the first American attempts to reproduce Daguerre's process and the rapid development that followed. Exposure times were shortened, techniques were modified and improved, and an entire commercial industry grew around the new medium.

Specialised studios and elaborate daguerreotype galleries appeared in American cities. Portrait photography became available to a much broader section of society than painted portraiture had ever been.

The book therefore documents more than the history of a photographic technique. It also shows how photography became part of everyday American life.

From technique to American visual culture

Newhall discusses photographers, inventors and entrepreneurs, technical experiments and the search for a practical colour process, while also examining what Americans chose to place in front of the camera.

Portraiture accounted for an important part of daguerreotype production. For the first time, large numbers of ordinary people could obtain a precise likeness of themselves and their families. At the same time, photographers used the camera to record cities, landscapes, buildings, transportation and events.

A separate chapter explains how American daguerreotypists modified Daguerre's original technique. Through these innovations, a distinctly American process gradually developed.

The extensive plate section also makes The Daguerreotype in America a visual history of nineteenth-century America.

Its 104 reproduced daguerreotypes include portraits of both famous and unidentified people as well as views of Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, the Cincinnati waterfront and San Francisco, together with photographs of ships, a locomotive, a bridge, a daguerreotype gallery and a Native American camp.

Among the well-known figures represented are Abraham Lincoln, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Daniel Webster, Sam Houston and John Brown.

Where known, the captions identify the daguerreotypist and provide the title, date and location of the original plate. The photographic section consequently functions not simply as illustration but as documentation of early American photography.

Beaumont Newhall

Beaumont Newhall (1908–1993) played an important role in establishing the history of photography as a field of study. He became the first curator of photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and later served as director of George Eastman House in Rochester.

His approach to photographic history combined art history with close attention to photographic processes, individual photographers and the development of the medium itself.

The Daguerreotype in America was originally published in 1961. This copy is the third revised edition, published in 1976. It retains the original text and illustrations while adding corrections and minor revisions, an updated bibliography and sixteen additional pages of plates.

The volume also includes biographies, notes on the text, notes on the plates, a selected bibliography and an index.
