Hot Dog Taste Test klinkt als een boek over eten, en dat is het ook – ongeveer. Lisa Hanawalt gebruikt eten vooral als vertrekpunt voor een bonte verzameling comics, geïllustreerde essays, aquarellen, lijstjes, reisverslagen en observaties over mensen, dieren en de eigenaardigheden van het dagelijks leven.

Ze bezoekt buffetten in Las Vegas, kijkt mee in de keuken van chef Wylie Dufresne, tekent straateten in New York, reist naar Argentinië, zwemt met otters en vraagt zich af hoe het samengaat om van paarden te houden en tegelijkertijd vlees te eten. Serieuze observaties kunnen daarbij zonder waarschuwing omslaan in absurdistische tekeningen, lichamelijke ongemakken of een volkomen ontspoord lijstje.

Eten als aanleiding

Hanawalt richt haar humor onder meer op de pretenties rond restaurants, chefs en de hedendaagse eetcultuur, maar Hot Dog Taste Test is geen verzameling restaurantcartoons. Eten biedt haar een manier om te kijken naar smaak, status, reizen, angst, relaties en menselijk gedrag.

Ook dieren duiken voortdurend op. Soms worden ze antropomorfe personages, soms zijn het echte dieren die Hanawalt ontmoet. Mensen krijgen op hun beurt regelmatig dierlijke trekken. Die uitwisseling tussen mens en dier is een herkenbaar onderdeel van haar beeldwereld.

De vorm verandert voortdurend: korte strips worden afgewisseld met geïllustreerde verhalen, dagboekachtige observaties, paginagrote tekeningen en handgeschreven lijstjes. Veel bijdragen verschenen oorspronkelijk in het Amerikaanse tijdschrift Lucky Peach.

Lisa Hanawalt

Lisa Hanawalt (1983) is een Amerikaanse cartoonist, illustrator en animator. Haar eerste grote verzameling, My Dirty Dumb Eyes, verscheen in 2013.

Ze werkte als production designer en producer aan de animatieserie BoJack Horseman. De combinatie van mensen en antropomorfe dieren die ook daar een belangrijke rol speelt, sluit aan bij haar eigen tekenwerk.

Voor haar geïllustreerde werk over eten ontving Hanawalt een James Beard Award. In Hot Dog Taste Test komen haar belangstelling voor voedsel, dieren, popcultuur en de vreemdere kanten van het dagelijks leven bij elkaar.

Conditie

Nog mooi en net exemplaar. De band vertoont lichte gebruikssporen. Aan de rand van de voorzijde bevindt zich een kleine stootbeschadiging van circa 0,5 cm; deze is zichtbaar op de productfoto. Verder is het boek mooi en schoon bewaard gebleven.

Hot Dog Taste Test sounds like a book about food, and it is – sort of. Lisa Hanawalt uses food as a starting point for a colourful collection of comics, illustrated essays, watercolours, lists, travel stories and observations about people, animals and the peculiarities of everyday life.

She visits Las Vegas buffets, observes chef Wylie Dufresne at work, draws New York street food, travels to Argentina, swims with otters and considers the contradiction of loving horses while also eating meat. Serious observations can suddenly give way to absurd drawings, bodily discomfort or a list that has wandered completely off course.

Food as a starting point

Hanawalt directs much of her humour at the pretensions surrounding restaurants, chefs and contemporary foodie culture, but Hot Dog Taste Test is much more than a collection of food cartoons. Food becomes a way of looking at taste, status, travel, anxiety, relationships and human behaviour.

Animals appear throughout the book as well. Sometimes they become anthropomorphic characters; elsewhere they are real animals encountered by Hanawalt. Humans, in turn, frequently acquire animal characteristics. This exchange between human and animal is a recurring element of her visual world.

The form constantly changes: short comics sit alongside illustrated stories, diary-like observations, full-page drawings and handwritten lists. Many of the pieces were originally published in the American food and culture magazine Lucky Peach.

Lisa Hanawalt

Lisa Hanawalt (1983) is an American cartoonist, illustrator and animator. Her first major collection, My Dirty Dumb Eyes, was published in 2013.

She worked as production designer and producer on the animated series BoJack Horseman. The combination of human and anthropomorphic animal characters associated with that series also has strong roots in her own artwork.
