Het verhaal speelt zich af in een Schots dorpje en draait om de stugge dierenarts Andrew MacDhui. Hij reserveert zijn medische vaardigheden uitsluitend voor 'nuttige' dieren en breekt het hart van zijn eenzame dochtertje door ongeduldig de dood van haar zieke kat te bevelen. De poes, Thomasina, overleeft deze traumatische ervaring echter en wordt min of meer 'opgevolgd' door Talitha (ofwel Bast-Ra), die verblijft bij Lori, de zachtaardige rode heks van Glen Ardagh. Lori leeft in vrede in haar bos vol kleine dieren en kruist al snel het pad van de verbitterde MacDhui.

Diepere symboliek en betekenis

Achter dit schijnbaar charmante dierenverhaal schuilt een stevige parabel over trauma en de beperkingen van strikte rationaliteit. Het centrale conflict in de roman is de botsing tussen kille, ongevoelige wetenschap en de empathische, onverklaarbare krachten van de natuur en menselijke warmte. Gallico toont op meesterlijke wijze aan dat louter technisch en kil redeneren destructief is zonder de zachte, menselijke kant. Daarnaast staan wedergeboorte en verlossing centraal. De periode waarin de kat gelooft een onfeilbare godin te zijn, fungeert tevens als een subtiele satirische spiegel voor de menselijke hoogmoed, in het bijzonder die van MacDhui die meende over leven en dood te kunnen beslissen. Uiteindelijk is het de liefde die alle personages terugbrengt naar hun ware zelf.

Over de auteur

Paul Gallico (1897–1976) was een succesvolle Amerikaanse schrijver en voormalig sportjournalist. Hij verwierf wereldwijde faam met zijn meeslepende, vaak ontroerende verhalen waarin dieren of gewone mensen in buitengewone situaties centraal staan. Tot zijn bekendste werken behoren The Snow Goose en de rampenroman The Poseidon Adventure. Thomasina was bij verschijnen dermate geliefd dat het verhaal in 1963 door Walt Disney werd verfilmd als The Three Lives of Thomasina. Op de omslag van deze specifieke editie prijkt dan ook een originele still uit deze verfilming, met in de hoofdrollen Patrick McGoohan en Susan Hampshire.

The story is set in a Scottish village and revolves around the taciturn veterinarian Andrew MacDhui. He reserves his medical skills exclusively for 'useful' animals and breaks the heart of his lonely little daughter by impatiently ordering the death of her sick cat. The cat, Thomasina, however, survives this traumatic experience and is more or less 'succeeded' by Talitha (also known as Bast-Ra), who stays with Lori, the gentle red witch of Glen Ardagh. Lori lives in peace in her forest full of small animals and soon crosses paths with the embittered MacDhui.

Deeper Symbolism and Meaning

Behind this seemingly charming animal story lies a solid parable about trauma and the limitations of strict rationality. The central conflict in the novel is the clash between cold, unfeeling science and the empathetic, inexplicable forces of nature and human warmth. Gallico masterfully demonstrates that merely technical and cold reasoning is destructive without the soft, human side. In addition, rebirth and redemption are central. The period during which the cat believes she is an infallible goddess also serves as a subtle satirical mirror for human hubris, particularly that of MacDhui, who believed he could decide over life and death. Ultimately, it is love that brings all characters back to their true selves.

Paul Gallico (1897–1976) was a successful American writer and former sports journalist. He achieved worldwide fame with his compelling, often moving stories in which animals or ordinary people in extraordinary situations take center stage. Among his best-known works are The Snow Goose and the disaster novel The Poseidon Adventure. Upon its release, Thomasina was so beloved that the story was adapted into a film by Walt Disney in 1963 as The Three Lives of Thomasina. The cover of this specific edition therefore features an original still from this film adaptation, starring Patrick McGoohan and Susan Hampshire.
