Over de auteur

Patricia Highsmith (1921–1995) was een toonaangevende Amerikaanse schrijfster die wereldwijde faam verwierf met haar psychologische thrillers. Ze debuteerde in 1950 met Strangers on a Train, dat vrijwel direct een iconische status kreeg door de succesvolle verfilming van meesterregisseur Alfred Hitchcock. Haar fascinatie voor obsessie, moord en de fluïde grens tussen goed en kwaad komt evengoed naar voren in haar befaamde reeks over de charmante sociopaat Tom Ripley, waarvan The Talented Mr. Ripley (1955) de bekendste is.

Naast haar misdaadromans schreef ze in 1952 onder het pseudoniem Claire Morgan de grensverleggende roman The Price of Salt (later heruitgebracht als Carol). Dit boek was absoluut revolutionair vanwege de openlijke en voor die tijd uitzonderlijk positieve weergave van een lesbische liefdesrelatie. Highsmith, die bekendstond als een complexe en introverte persoonlijkheid, bracht een groot deel van haar leven door in Europa. Ze wordt nog altijd beschouwd als een van de meest invloedrijke en literairemisdaadauteurs van de twintigste eeuw.

Alongside her crime novels, she wrote the groundbreaking novel The Price of Salt (later republished as Carol) in 1952 under the pseudonym Claire Morgan. Highsmith, who was known as a complex and introverted personality, spent a large part of her life in Europe.
