Non-Places – Marc Augé
Introduction to an Anthropology or Supermodernity
An essential and lucid essay on the anthropology of 'supermodernity', exploring the anonymous spaces that increasingly define our lives.
Introduction
In Non-Places, the renowned French anthropologist Marc Augé introduces the concept of 'supermodernity' to describe the logic of late-capitalist life. He argues that an ever-increasing proportion of our existence is spent in "non-places": supermarkets, airports, hotels, and motorways. These spaces, unlike traditional 'places', do not integrate history or organic social life. Instead, they create a unique form of solitude and a profound alteration of our awareness, where individuals are connected in a uniform, fleeting manner.

Content & Background
Augé seeks to establish an intellectual framework for an anthropology of the contemporary world. He distinguishes between 'place'—encrusted with historical monuments and social life—and the 'non-place', where we are all in transit. Unlike the interwoven old and new of traditional modernity, supermodernity is self-contained, presenting local and exotic particularities as two-dimensional spectacles. This book is a timely analysis of the far-reaching effects these curious, ubiquitous spaces have on our public and private experiences.
