Toen Jeff Buckley in 1997 op dertigjarige leeftijd verdronk in de Wolf River bij Memphis, liet hij slechts één tijdens zijn leven voltooid studioalbum achter: Grace uit 1994. Dat album en de concerten die erop volgden bezorgden hem een reputatie die na zijn dood alleen maar groter werd.

Fotograaf Merri Cyr maakte een belangrijk deel van de beelden waarmee Buckley uit die periode wordt herinnerd. Zij fotografeerde hem voor Grace, werkte met hem tijdens zijn opkomst en vergezelde hem op tournee. Daardoor zijn haar foto's niet alleen portretten van een bekende muzikant, maar vormen ze ook een visueel verslag van een korte en uitzonderlijk intensief gedocumenteerde periode in zijn leven.

A Wished-For Song brengt die foto's samen met interviews en herinneringen van mensen uit Buckleys omgeving. Studio-opnamen en podiumfoto's worden afgewisseld met informelere beelden van repetities, reizen en momenten achter de schermen. Het resultaat bevindt zich ergens tussen fotoboek, biografie en persoonlijke herinnering.

De oorspronkelijke hardcover verscheen in 2002. Deze herziene paperbackeditie uit 2008 werd uitgebreid met een nieuwe fotosectie en biedt daarmee meer beeldmateriaal dan de eerste editie.

Voor liefhebbers van Jeff Buckley is het boek vooral interessant omdat fotografie hier geen illustratie bij een biografie is, maar een belangrijk deel van het verhaal zelf. Cyr bevond zich dicht bij Buckley in de jaren waarin Grace ontstond en hij van relatief onbekende singer-songwriter uitgroeide tot internationaal bewonderde artiest.

Merri Cyr is een Amerikaanse fotograaf die vooral bekend werd door haar samenwerking met Jeff Buckley. Haar foto's werden gebruikt voor zijn platen en verschenen in tal van muziekpublicaties. In A Wished-For Song combineert ze haar eigen beeldarchief met interviews en herinneringen rond Buckleys leven en muziek.

When Jeff Buckley drowned in Memphis in 1997 at the age of thirty, he left behind only one completed studio album released during his lifetime: Grace (1994). The album and the tours that followed established a reputation that continued to grow after his death.

Photographer Merri Cyr created many of the images through which Buckley and the Grace era are now remembered. She photographed him during his rise to prominence and accompanied him on tour, giving her unusual access to both the performer and the person away from the stage.

A Wished-For Song brings Cyr's photographs together with interviews and recollections from people who knew and worked with Buckley. Performance and studio photographs sit alongside more informal images from rehearsals, travelling and life behind the scenes. The result lies somewhere between a photography book, an oral biography and a personal memoir.

The original hardcover edition appeared in 2002. This revised paperback edition from 2008 includes an additional section of photographs, expanding the visual record presented in the first edition.

For admirers of Buckley, its particular appeal is that the photography is not simply used to illustrate his story: it is an essential part of that story. Cyr was there during the years in which Grace was created and Buckley developed from a relatively unknown singer-songwriter into an internationally admired artist.

Merri Cyr is an American photographer best known for her work with Jeff Buckley. Her photographs appeared on his releases and in numerous music publications. In A Wished-For Song she combines her photographic archive with interviews and personal recollections surrounding Buckley's life and music.
